Explore the felt matrix and the enormous possibilities of surface expression available while working in the larger format of outerwear. Such points as seamless construction, drapability, felt friendly closures, and what makes a quality garment will be covered. Participants will be expected to find, test, and bring fabrics and some wool, which will be used to reinforce structural, as well as, the visual impact of their designs. Think simple, striking, and characteristically felt functional (or welcome the other end of the spectrum of outrageous costume.) Some experience with the medium will prove helpful to the participant.

This is a 5-day hand feltmaking program delving into the multitude of design possibilities available through manipulation during various stages of the process. In combination with slide lectures, demonstrations, and various individual exercises developed to exemplify the capabilities of the unique wool fiber you will finalize your stronger ideas in terms of a larger project to be included in a final critique.

A 3-day workshop program covering a variety of points exemplifying design techniques for hand feltmaking. With a departure point of a slide lecture, demonstrations, and exercises, both individual and group oriented, we will build upon the matrix of felted wool, taking our experiments into a final, larger work. Bring your design ideas and some good examples of your own work regardless of the medium in order to speak about your individual design vision.

Is your husband thinning a bit on top? Have you ever wanted long Rapunzel locks but lacked the patience to grow out your own hair? Ever wonder what exactly is the best use for that Motherfs Day present of the wooden holed spaghetti measure? This mystery, as well as, an in depth coverage of basic concepts in feltmaking (beads, ropes, bangles, badges, corsages, and lots more) will be introduced to build a personal vocabulary through exercise and experimentation. The aim is to create elements for sculptural accessories (as well as garment friendly closures.) We will cover after-dyeing and color shaping, as well as, work with applications for direct use on the body. Slide lecture and group work as usual. All levels welcome.
DEMO: A Feltmakerfs Bag of Tricks Feltmaking has made an enormous leap from nomadic survival coverings to the 21st century realm of textile art, clothing, and accessories. Have you ever wonder about the process, or the capabilities of the medium within the transfer of fiber into fabric, or what a felting needle is? Through focusing on my pet attractions to the medium and explaining key points about the felted matrix Ifd like to showcase whatfs in the current Joi Rae Textiles studio trunk of tricks.

Seductive Surfaces in Feltmaking/Shifting Shapes is a diversified class introducing a variety of motif techniques involved with manipulating surface and shape during the felting and shrinking process. Slide shows will be used as departure points for daily themes. Group interaction will be emphasized in order to expand the variety of samples which will be shared at end of course. The techniques include qualities of wool fibers and their capabilities as felt fabrics, fiber blending, color mixing versus dyeing; tails, loops, and bobbles; windows; spider-lace and lattice work; flat braiding; edge-finishing techniques, and much more. From two-dimensions into the three-dimensions of Shifting Shapes course follows for two days. Taking your new samples further into seamless shapes of unusual form we will discover the malleability of the fabric. We will practice with a treasure pouch and move into personal objects depending on time. Welcome participants with extensive beginnerfs experience in feltmaking.

"Felting the Matrix Fantasia"

Pro Chemical & Dye, Fall River, Mass.
Workshop location: Fall River, Mass PO Box 14, Somerset, MA
Enhance your material spectrum by combining, within a well felted matrix, other exciting yet less likely to felt fibers. Experimental dyeing sessions (dip, clamped, tied and wrapped) with unusual fibers, such as pet fur, horse hair, silk hankies, flax/grasses, etc. Due to experimentation we will work in a smaller scale to create mini-sculptural objects with the spotlight on body adornments. Think bracelets, brooches, hat pins, rings and other accessories within which these unusual materials will be outstanding. Participants will be expected to search for small amounts of exotic fibers they wish to dye and combine in addition to that which will be introduced. Try your local zoo for starters. Beginner to experienced felters welcomed.
