Welcome to the entangled web site of Joi Rae Textiles. Based in Kyoto, Japan, but in contact with the world, principal designer and felt-maker Jorie Johnson creates, works, exhibits, and teaches. Through her novel textures, surface motifs, and style, she expresses a new vision of the ancient technique of feltmaking.
Joi Rae Textiles is a textile design studio producing innovative hand-felted woolen fabrics for clothing, accessories, berets, and hats, as well as unique carpets and wall-pieces for interior spaces.

My FeltMaking Book!

Jorie has published an illustrated book in Japanese that introduces you to the joy and art of feltmaking, and shows you step-by-step how to make some unique items.

The book includes chapters on the story of wool; the history of feltmaking; traditional and contemporary motifs; washing, carding, and blending wool; plus 18 original projects with instructive pictorial layouts accompanying each.
Beginning with soft dyed and carded wool fleece, the student is instructed how to control the shrinking process of the wool into a strong fabric and continue to shape the work into its final three-dimensional form.
